The Wolverine 2013 Review B+

The Wolverine is the follow up to the disappointing X-Men Origins movie.  This film takes the elements we like about the character and takes it to the next level.  What we get is a Yukuza action flick which isn't a bad thing.  The action sequences are marvelously staged and the cinematography is above average.  Director James Mangold is at the helm of this sequel spin off.  Mangold's previous work includes 3:10 to Yuma and the forgettable Knight and Day with Tom Cruse and Cameraon Diaz.
We first see the Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman locked in a cage for some unspecified reason just before the H-Bomb is dropped on Hiroshima.  Wolverine saves a guard from the nuclear blast by using his bodies healing ability to absorb the flames.  Years later Wolverine is living like a nomad presumably still devastated by the events of X-Men 3.  In the previous film  he is forced to kill Jean Grey aka The Phoenix and becomes so traumatized by this event he chooses to live off the grid.  Conflict happens when his only friend a burly grizzly bear is severely injured by a gang of hunters and Wolverine is forced to end the bears suffering.
Seeking retribution Wolverine tracks down the hunters and lets them now how unhappy he is about the situation.  I had a problem with this scene because it is a bit of a stretch how he randomly runs into a character named Yukio played by Rila Fukushima.  She is a deadly assassin with precognitive mutant abilities.  I would assume she used her psychic abilities to find Wolverine at that particular bar because it isn't explicitly stated in the movie.

Yukio convinces Logan to fly to Japan to meet an old friend who we find out is the guard he saved from nuclear blast years ago and is currently on his death bed.  He summoned Wolverine because he wants his mutant healing ability.  Logan is unwilling to help him because he believes death is a natural end.
From this point on the story is about everyone trying to rob the Wolverine of his mutant powers.  I get the feeling that this film largely caters to the Asian film market with it subtle and not so subtle nods to Asian culture.  The movie is very much a Yukuza action flick where we see Wolverines use his claws as deadly weapons, slicing and dicing foes explicitly riding the line between PG-13 and R Rated violence.  I enjoyed the creative action sequences particularly one taking place on top of a 300mph bullet train.  The set design is phenomenal and the cinematography is exceptional giving the movie a particularly slick look.

The pacing doesn't seem to slow down and stays centrally focused on the Wolverine character.  I would have liked some acknowledgment of the bigger events going on in this expanding marvel universe.  I wanted to know what The Avengers and Shield were currently up to.   My only complaint is that the computer graphics are quite obvious in certain scenes and particularly unnecessary in others.  There is one where  Jackman as Wolverine is in the woods walking along side a computer generated bear.  I don't know if it was an insurance issues but the filmmakers could have had a real bear for that shot.  I have to acknowledge the rigorous training regiment Jackman must have endeared to look the way he does on camera.  According to fit magazines Jackman is taking training advice from former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson.

The Wolverine is quality entertainment and a recommended travel movie.  Stay for the credits as they lead into the next instalment Bryan Singer's Days of Future Past.  See The Wolverine in theaters B+!

The Last Fall 2013 Review B+

The Last Fall is a independent film directed by Matthew Cherry.  It is about a professional football player transitioning to life after the game.  Its allot like Love and Basketball meets Any Given Sunday.  I enjoyed the myth busting aspect of this movie with regards to a professional athletes actual salary. Unlike other professional sports football players don't get a guaranteed contract.  When Kyle Bishop (played by Lance Gross) is cut from his team the situation is very jarring for him.  He returns to his hometown embarrassed and broke, his friends are surprised to see him and they are shocked when he is asking for a job.
Directed by Matthew Cherry a former professional football player himself Cherry relocated to Los Angeles and reinvented himself as a filmmaker.  He enrolled in Streetlights a non-profit production assistant training program that teaches people of limited means to become production assistants.  Cherry began his career on the sets of The Game, Heroes and Girlfriends.  The Last Fall was his directorial debut and I find it impressive how Cherry was able to wrangle all these elements in a effective manner.
Watching this movie I felt the protagonist was sympathetic enough for me to root for however I find the ending a bit of a letdown.  Spoiler alert the main character has to make a critical decision but the movie ends before he makes it.  I can appreciate an opened ended ending but I found it unsatisfying.  I would have preferred to see the main character make the tough decision to continue playing football or explore a new life with his college sweetheart.  This ending nullifies his previous struggle.
For an independent movie it is unique in that it is largely devoid of racial stereotypes contains little if any profanity or drug use and no nudity.  As a first time director this film is a triumph of technique and cinematography.  I applaud any minority filmmaker that can get a good movie in the can.  I am grading The Last Fall a B+ I look forward to Cherry's next project.

The Conjuring 2013 review C-

*Clap* *Clap*------- The Conjuring is currently scaring in theaters.  This is James Wan's latest foray into the horror genre.  Before I get into my review a little background on this director Wan begun his career by making a short film which would later become the Saw franchise.  He shopped it around to investors and was able to procure financing.  After Saw became a bonafide hit Wan had proven himself a bankable talent.

However multiple instalments later Saw ended up diluting the original direction of the first film.  Wan later went onto direct Insidious a creepy movie about a haunted child.  In it he continued his theme of utilizing creepy dolls and practical F/X work.  So when it comes to The Conjuring I am extremely excited.  I am familiar with the case and the people depicted therein.  Ed and Lorraine Warren are famous paranormal investigators.  They are controversial people because they have been accused of being charlatans but they welcome skeptics and present compelling paranormal evidence.

In "The Demonologist" the Warrens explain the demonic strategy for creating fear.  Infestation, oppression and possession.  Infestation is the first stage of a haunting... floor creeks, apparitions, shadows out the corner of your eye basic creepy stuff...oppression is when something happen to oppress the will of the victim to make them give up.  And possession is when one surrenders complete control of their body and mind to a demonic spirit usually ending in the victims death.

My problem with the The Conjuring is that it shows someone being possessed at the will of a demon which is incorrect because a human cannot be possessed unless permission is given.  The ending was overly dramatic for me.  Paranormal novices will find The Conjuring entertaining but I'm giving this movie a C-.

I'm giving it this grade because there are story elements that are left hanging and the computer graphics are bad.  This would have been better if it were released on Redbox.

Star Trek Into Darkness review 2013 grade A

Star Trek is about working together to advance society.  In the Abrams era of Star Trek most of this tone has been lost in favor of a more action oriented story telling.  Its brisk it's kinetic its a fresh cote paint of on an old car.  So when I get into my review of Into Darkness I'm focusing on whats under the hood.

The story pulls us in with an Indiana Jones style action sequence where Kirk and Dr McCoy are running from a prehistoric extraterrestrial culture.  The dialogue is snappy and traded via banter in the middle of an action scene.  It seems like these new films are obsessed with entertaining you.   I have no problem with that but I do have an issue with invoking 9/11 like imagery to give the movie modern gravitas.

My issue with 9/11 imagery is that it is beginning to become cliche' with themes of smoking buildings, hunting terrorists, quick retribution this cheapens the events of  that horrible day by using it as an entertainment context.  The antagonist is Khan played marvelously by Benedict Cumberbatch.  Khan is a genetically engineered super human fighting for his people.  After blowing up a Star Fleet building the Enterprise is dispatched to terminate him without trial.  Raising moral and ethical conflicts among the crew.  After Kirk makes the choice not to kill Khan we later learn of a bigger Star Fleet conspiracy.

I love the action and where the story seems to be going and if this is any indication of what the new Star Wars sequels could be then this is a galaxy I want to continue to explore.

Movie grade A.

Man of Steel 2013 review B-

Superman has always been a difficult comic book character to write for because he is impervious to everything.  To hurt Kal-El (Superman's kryptonian name) you needed a plot device like Kryptonite a rock that could kill him or a threat to someone he loves to heighten the drama.  When I first heard Zach Snider was directing the next cinematic outing for Kal-El I was ecstatic I suffered through allot of lackluster films.

Snider is a director who seemingly came from nowhere. His wife is a famous producer which helps in the business but he really is a good director.   He takes on risky projects and makes them incredibly entertaining and profitable at the box office.  This is the director of Watchmen a graphic novel adaptation and 300 another graphic novel written by Frank Miller.   He doesn't necessarily have a visual style but all of his films feature some type of action element with an incredible amount of computer graphics.

So his role as director of Man of Steel had me pumped and reminiscing on the previous films.  Anyone remember Superman 3 co-starring Richard Pryor where we literally see a drunken superman?  Followed up by that god-awful Supergirl movie and my least favorite Quest for Peace with Nuclear Man.  Superman Returns directed by Bryan Singer was a missed opportunity to take the story in new direction.  Instead what we got was a continuation of the Donnor films with a hint of dead beat father thrown into the mix.

In Man of Steel we get an origin story focusing on Clark Kent learning who he really is and where he came from.  He learns to accept his role as the symbol for hope.  Its interesting that he doesn't actually call himself Superman in the movie.  I loved this because what we get is more like a Superman Begins movie.  The script was penned by Michigan native David Goyer who gives us a story that explores the pivotal moment where Clark Kent accepts his unique abilities and assumes his role as protector of humanity.

Krypton plays a significant role in Man of Steel, heavily inspired by the matrix.  Apparently on this world people are bio engineered to fulfil a specific societal need.  Kal-El's birth is significant because he was naturally conceived and given the choice to grow up and be who he wants to be.   The enivitable destruction of Krypton is realized through cutting edge computer graphics however the movie ventures into sensory overload because most of the violence has little consequence.

I have a problem with endless punching between two super powered beings with no indication of fatigue.  The antagonist Zod is a good villain but I would have preferred someone who hasn't been in a Superman movie before… Lobo… Darkseid maybe?  This movie grade is a solid B- because the final battle reminded me of that battle from Matrix revolutions which was way too long.  And I did not like Superman’s lack of concern for human life.  Why didn’t he take the battle to the moon away from populated cities?

It is good to see the S on the big screen again but I think they should find a way to show us Superman’s physical limitations to make the conflict mean something.

White House Down 2013 review C+

What started out as a well thought out political thriller ended on a low note for me.  Roland Emmerich's latest foray into the destruction genre has yielded a pretty standard piece of entertainment.  " White House Down" was viewed by MC at North Hollywood's Laemmle theater a nice venue for movies, small intimate definitely getting the MC stamp of approval.  Unfortunately the same cannot be given to this movie's main character Carl played by Channing Tatum.

He is the typical working parent unable to maintain a good relationship with his daughter.  Carl is interviewing for a positing in the President's secret service detail he is denied because he has a record of not finishing anything he starts.  This theme is the set up to why Carl is committed to getting his daughter back at the end.

The White House is taken over by a ruthless gang of mercenaries eager to start World War 3.  The movie reveals the President's hired help to be a bunch of bad shots and woefully unprepared for a surprise attack.  I doubt such disorganization would exist in reality but it fun to see how such an attack would play out.  It was fun seeing what all the hi-tech White House gadgetry can do.  Jamie Foxx plays a nerdy President derivative of our current Commander and Chief President Obama.

He does a good job without getting overly political and staying inspirational but I don't think I'm going to vote Jamie Foxx for President anytime soon because he's best when he's laying flawed and broken characters not politicians.   I 'm giving this movie a C+ because of the annoying daughter Tatum is figuratively going through hell trying to rescue.  I found her antics insufferable along with the armature visual effects work dollar show this movie.

Anime horror/sci-fi master Koichi Ohata Genocyber and MD Geist discussion.

This is a review of two cult classic anime films directed by Koichi Ohata. Although derivative of "Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell" these films push the limits of graphic violence and horror. Not for the kiddies these are action anime films that have an almost indie feel.

M Dot Strange - The new face of do it yourself filmmaking.

M dot Strange is a director who is silently on the come up.  If you've heard of him chances are your thinking outside the box.  Originally from California M dot is redefining what is to be an independent filmmaker.  With his skill set he could easily land a job at a reputable post production facility doing animation work but he is sticking to his guns and putting his visions on screen via the internet.

I have mad respect for this brother because he is a true artist in every since of the word.  He first appeared on the radar with his innovative film "We Are the Strange" which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2007.  Budgeted at $20,000 M dot created a unique animation style called St8 anime---inspired by 8 bit Nintendo video games.  His style has been shamelessly ripped off by many copy cats but he continues to innovate.

His latest film "Heart String Marionette" has taken five years of his life to develop.  M dot has bypassed studio distribution and decided to released the film himself over the internet.  He has uploaded a try before you buy version and a premium download for $5.00.  According to his website he's sold 438 downloads as of this posting.

M dot is interested in moving onto other projects as of now but I suspect that "Heart String Marionette" could have done better if it was marketed a little bit more.  I haven't seen the whole film so I wont do a review but I feel that most of his fans like him as a person and artist.  I believe they will over look the narrative quality of his work and respect the effort.

M dot's work isn't going away and cannot be ignored if he keeps putting stuff out there and doesn't quit he will reach his goals.  Countless unknown artists have inspiration to draw from thanks to M dot's work.

In numbers obsessed Hollywood it's refreshing to see someone creating visual art for the love but I hope his work finds a way to the big leagues.

Prometheus review-The most disapointing director come back since "The Phantom Menace"

The problem with 2012 "Prometheus" is that it assumed it would be a success.  To use a basketball analogy this movie already began getting ready for the next season before winning the championship.  One of the good byproducts of this film is that it has been able to create audience discussion.  Sharing ideas, personal interpretations and alternate takes on the material.  The film is really good in the beginning especially with the David character.  It goes off the rails when the score kicks in.  The score contradicts the established tone at the beginning of the film.

I understand that the engineers are responsible for the creation of life but if they are so advanced why is it necessary for them to ritually take kill themselves?  If you pose a question in the story you should at least make an attempt to answer it, this film does not pull you in.  The greatest thing it had going for it was the mystery.

I understand why this film was released overseas first.  Typically foreign audiences are more open to stories of personal interpretations, especially in Europe but American audiences want answers.  The success of Christopher Noland's "Inception" proves that there is a market for intelligent science fiction.  So I do not understand why the story is uneven in it's quality.

Let me say this hate it, love it, despise it this film will make its money back its not "John Carter" Ridley's going to live to film another day.  One thing this film did right was establish the origin of the Xenomorph I like the biological weapon nature of the creature and its creation from the all purpose goo.  I like this twist, forget the 3D or the weak characters this was some good stuff.  It establishes the accidental creation of the Xenomorph.

The formula:  All purpose goo+Human DNA+Large facehugger creature +Engineer DNA=Proto Xenomorph

Movie Grade C-

The Avengers movie review

Not knowing much about the film or expecting anything amazing this film reminded me of what a really good movie can be.  The film could have been a mess with all its complicated characters arcs.  One thing that strikes me is how user friendly this film is.  For someone like me who is not familiar with the comic book it introduces the characters in a palatable way.

We begin at S.H.E.L.D. headquarters and quickly establish the crisis and villain then we slowly start calling everyone up and then we get them in a room together.  We watch how they interact and then we get into the action.  Incredible set pieces and pacing.  I don't like the marketing machine behind The Avengers because I don't like being bombarded with merchandise and tie ins before I've even had a chance to see the film alas filmmakers don't make movies studios do.

I love the judicious use of modern gadgetry in this hybrid sci-fi, fantasy, action film

A+

Tom Leykis Show 2.0 review Tom's personal Hail Mary

Tom Leykis is back after a 3 year hiatus I would call myself a 101 student.  His show has always been entertaining when he gets into the Leykisisms the bread and butter of his brand.  My only constructive criticism is his format needs to evolve, the endless ass kissing from listeners gets a little tired and the lack of celebrity guests lowers the entertainment value which at the shows current level is problematic.  Mr Leykis is trying to re-establish his buzz that's cool and all but I would like to see some new sh*t some growth I mean really 3 years is a  long time to hear the same thing we heard 3 years ago.

The Leykis show is offensive to women as a result NO WOMEN CALL IN it gets tired hearing guy after guy call in.  Its a locker room with almost homoerotic tendencies there are no woman on the staff too many damn dudes.

Tom needs to get more experts on the show and grow. Shows like Love Lines are great Dr Drew was a great host who didn't exclude he was an expert that could back up his advice with medical knowledge he had an endless well to draw from.  The Leykis show has an air of negativity a novelty which may be lethal to the show's future.  I think Tom should try to do more good for the community address issues like cancer take an interest in youth issues don't just write someone off--- offer alternatives as opposed to dismissing listeners that don't fit into the 101 values.

Now I will say that Tom Leykis is a pioneer with what he is doing, Mr Leykis is an out of the box thinker instead of selling out for an okay paycheck he's using his own resources to create an empire make no mistake Leykis is a creative talent to be reckoned with.  His tenacity is something to be admired and think it will open the door to many other names following his lead.  And what model is he following?  I believe he is getting help from top creative talents but once the bugs get worked out he'll have something special going on.

This new show is Leykis's personal Hail Mary it feels good hearing the take me outs again!

Maestro of the movies John Williams concert review at Hollywood Bowl 2011 was a B+ performance

John Williams in concert was a B+ perfromance not an A+ because of venue distractions e.g. the LAPD flying helicopters overhead during the orchastras rendenton of the Asteroid Chase from "The Empire Strikes Back"  exteamly distracting and... it just wasnt enough... after enduring the more obscure stuff Williams has done over his legendary career (no sarcasm intended) I was happy when he got to the more popular stuff but I was looking forward to riffs from Minority Report or Jurrasic Park or even a sneak at War Horse and... was dissapointed that there was no prequel stuff!  There were bits from Jaws, a well-edited Western tribute, a Sci-fi fantasy, horror tribute which was very cool as well as seeing an ocean of lightsabers brought in by fans very nice.

Another issue I had with the concert was the audio I had decent seats but it wasnt loud enough for me I know its not THX its a concert at the Hollywood Bowl which is the best concert venue on Earth but his music played differently in real life as opposed to a DVD/Blu-Ray not the same acustic enjoyment.  But what I did enjoy was when JW took the mike and narrated the opening chase scene from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" with no music simply talking about where the music went and then played the scene agin with the LA philharmonic Orchestra... giving the lucky audience an interesting glimpse into the hardwork and genius it takes to fill in the uninteresting bits of cinema with the perfect score... seeing JW is well worth the price of admission and the ultimate date night there was an ocean of beautiful woman in attendance that night at the Hollywood Bowl.

Inception Review: The greatest film since "The Dark Night" this one will take best original screenplay and soundtrack on Oscar night!

"Inception" is a incomprehensible puzzle of a film and the best original science fiction since "The Matrix" but don’t be fooled this film is nothing like matrix. Inception began 10 years ago as a 80-page treatment but Writer/Director Christopher Noland decided that he didn’t have the skill and resources to make a large budget film so he honed his talents on "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Night" then having proved himself a bankable director Noland polished his script and now it is legend. "Inception" is the covert planting of an idea without the mark (the person) knowing about it, the trick is to get into the mark's psyche and plant the idea and get out without them knowing and beliving they came up with the idea on their own.  Now that is a very high concept approach!  How exactly did this film deliver the goods when so many other summer films did not?

For starters the cast is amazing Leonardo DiCaprio does angry and confused extremely well his character has lost everything his children, his nationality and the woman he loves... his latest inception will allow him to see his kids again but his guilt may compromise his goals, without giving too much of the plot away the story is amazing the concept of a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream... then limbo is brilliant along with the Hans Zimmer score with its loud BRRMMMM... BRRMMM it's dark, brooding and overpowering bass line gets into your head and stays there I must see this film again its already bought on DVD.

The SFX team on "Inception" have achieved greatness but I didn’t like one hiccup the scene where the characers Dom Cobb and Ariadne (the dream architect) walked up the wall, it was a little cheesy but Noland is allowed a hiccup or two another scene I'm baffled about as to how they did it was the weightlessness scene.  It looked so incredibly real I'm guessing they built the set on some kind of cargo plane and they did a steep decent to create the effect but it was so real kudos to the FX team it's up there with "The Matrix" bullet time effect if they're smart the FX wizards should keep that magic trick under they're hat.

I give this movie an A+ and expect this one to win Oscars in best original screenplay, best score, best costume design but the FX are great but not Avatar great and finally THANK YOU CHRISTOPHER NOLAND FOR NOT MAKING THIS FILM IN FREKEN 3D!!!!!!!

Predators 2010 Review: I give this movie an A- because the ending didnt work for me.

This movie can look forward to being downloaded, rented and pirated for a long time to come what was cool about this film was it stayed true to the spirit of the original but added to the Predator mythos. The film is essentially about survival of the fittest.

When earths greatest warriors from around the globe are dropped unto an alien planet to be hunted the thrills never let up... even in the exposition scenes I'm never bored excellent pacing and awesome FX... Stan Winston would be proud and what is most gratifying is fans of the series can finally stop watching AvP or AvPR to get their predator fix.

The visuals and music are well done especially the updated predvison a little more sophisticated but one wonders if the predators are so advanced why not just create some kind of ocular implant why wear that clunky helmet? Is it a cultural thing or is it for protection who knows all that matters is that the Predator is back and has regained his dignity

I'm giving this movie an A- because as good as it was it didn’t strike an emotional accord towards the end it reminded me of a really good Dark Horse graphic novel adaptation.

TOY STOY 3 REVIEW (((((Spoiler Alert)))))

I didn’t see Toy Story 1 or 2 but part 3 is very good, the story was allot more clever than I was expecting to see. Sine Pixar's last film Up I have slowly becoming a fan of their films. Toy Story 3 is very cool because it is about moving on in life.

Andy is going to college and he is no longer playing with the toys. At this point their getting anxious about their futures will they end up in the attic or worse yet in the trash... well they are accidentally donated to a daycare where they believe they've found Nirvana when in fact the daycare holds a sinister secrete, Its really a prison where discarded toys cannot escape and toddlers literally break all they new toys daily.

I liked the characters and the voices where perfect this film really makes you think about how playing with toys is good for a child's imagination the only thing I was a little confused on is if these toys could walk and talk why not just tell Andy not to throw them away why do they go out their way to be lifeless I don’t understand that part of the film it also asks the question what else in the Toy Story world is really alive but pretending not to be?

I give this film ***** 5 stars out of 5 very engaging film for people of any age.

Avatar Review

Avatar is a great ground breaking film on par with the original Star Wars believe it or not it was worth the wait, however the story is a missed opportunity to examine corporate America's greed. The characters where good but not great and the action scenes where a little long. However that does not detract from the fact that this is the best sci-fi film of 2009. The film itself is the essence of good science fiction which at its best can make the viewer see the world in a different way, Avatar accomplishes this in spades. After seeing this film I was wondering how future filmmakers will use this new 3D technology, honestly this is a film I expected to see from Japan which has always been ahead of the technological curve.

I believe Avatar is James Cameron's thesis film. I could'nt help but think about how far CG characters have come since (cringe) Jar Jar Binks, to LDR's Gollum, and Star Wars Episode 3's General Grevious. New Zealand's Weta Digital is definetly a force to be reckon with I love ILM but there going to have to step their game up.

The story is about a group of scientists trying to save an indegionous alien species on the planet Pandora (a pandora's box reference) from a greedy corporation that wants to relocate them so the can mine valuable mineral deposits. The hero goes from spying on them to falling in love with an alien and becoming their leader, I'm cool with a hero's journey but this transition felt a little forced. The dialouge could haved used a bit more polishing, I'm cool with profanity but when it dosent work its a little akward and there were a few akward moments in this film.

At $16.00 per ticket this is a good one time treat intended to be experinced at an IMAX or Dome theater.

Movie Grade B+ because of the visuals but the story is a little hard to digest.

Star Trek 2009 DVD Review

I recently purchased a DVD copy of ST 2009 and it's actually pretty good what I like is that it includes a digital copy for laptop and ipod users very forward thinking. There is a commentary track and pretty good special features. The film itself is presented in anamorphic widescreen with a dolby digital sound mix, excellent picture quality... this film gets watched allot at my job and I dont feel like a geek for bringing it in because it's more of an action flick than a traditional sci-fi film. The story is a prequel that reboots the series and gives it some much needed respectability. I think after ST Insurection I turned in my phaser ST TNG officially sucked okay, I then became a Star Wars fan. Lets face it the Star Wars universe is cooler and more epic than Star Trek and of course it has John William's scoring it... Star Trek was cool because of the characters and the adventure.

The story is about James Tibreious Kirk and how he joined Star Fleet and became Captain of the USS Enterprise. In this version they create a parallel universe and destroy the planet Vulcan changing the entire timeline very ballsy move there but I love it. I especially like the visual style with the light flares who would have known ST would ever be cool again.

This is not a must have but a welcomed editon to your DVD collection
Movie Grade B+
